Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
